Vodafone Ireland is dubbed the country’s largest mobile operator
The company saw its Irish mobile customer base fall by 11,000 over the last year
It gained 3,000 mobile customers over the last three months
DUBLIN, Ireland - Vodafone Ireland, dubbed the country’s largest mobile operator, has recorded a bittersweet period in terms of its recent performance in the country.
The company said on Tuesday that while it has managed to stopped losing mobile customers, it is still seeing key revenues fall.
The mobile operator noted that its Irish mobile customer base fell by 11,000 over the last year and by 66,000 compared to two years ago.
However, it said that its recent numbers seem to have noted the drop subsiding as it gained 3,000 mobile customers over the last three months and 4,000 mobile customers over the last six months.
Faced with harsh competition, Vodafone said that it has prioritized keeping its contract and business customer base, ceding much of its lower-yielding prepay customers to low cost competitors.
The company has, over the last three years, seen slight increases in its contract customer base but has, at the same time, recorded sharp falls in its prepay customer base, as lower-cost rivals swooped.
During the period, Vodafone said that it has recorded a 3.3 percent rise in its fixed line broadband customer base to 265,400.
This, it said, made it the third largest broadband operator in Ireland.
Vodafone Ireland also noted that its half-year service revenue fell by 3 percent or 15 million euros from 484 million euros to 469 million euros.
It said that its most recent quarterly service revenue for July, August and September fell by 3.3 percent or 8 million euros from 242 million euros to 234 million euros.
The company has blamed its drop in revenue on regulation, including an end to most roaming charges within the EU.
It has also blamed a reduction in controlled mobile termination rates from other operators.
The company’s group results revealed that Ireland is second last out of nine European countries in service revenue growth.
It is one of only two of the nine named European markets where service revenue is lower now than two years ago.
