Washington [USA], Oct 12 (ANI): The United States of America lauded Ukraine for extending the law on special status for Russia-controlled areas of eastern Ukraine. Washington also came down sharply on Moscow for its 'continued failure to fulfill its Minsk commitments.'
Praising the Ukrainian leadership and Parliament for extending the law which would have expired on October 10, the US said that it demonstrated Ukraine's continued commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict and implementation of the Minsk agreements.
In a statement released by the White House, the US asked Russia to join Ukraine in the peaceful pursuits. "We call on Russia to join Ukraine in pursuing peace. Russia and the forces it arms, trains, leads, and fights alongside have yet to follow through on repeated commitments to cease hostilities, withdraw foreign fighters, exchange detainees, or disband the illegal armed formations," it added.
The statement continued: "Moscow should institute a full and comprehensive ceasefire and cancel the illegal sham elections it is organising in the Russia-controlled parts of eastern Ukraine."
The US further stated that it will continue to support the efforts of France and Germany in the Normandy Format to advance implementation of the Minsk agreements. It also noted that it was open to dialogue with Russia on avenues for restoring Ukraine's territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders. (ANI)
