DUBLIN, Ireland - According to reports, a parish priest has concluded that the alleged miracle at a church in Co Mayo was a reaction to the water.
This incident happened after a piece of Communion bread fell on the floor at St Joseph's Church in Aghamore, near Knock. After that, it was immersed in water to dissolve.
What happened next went viral on social media, with one Facebook post claiming that the parish priest found blood and flesh tissue in the water.
After the story broke and was widely shared on social media, an Irishman, Robert Nugent, pointed out that the photo used in the Facebook post was not actually of the event. Even though there were numerous witnesses, no photographs of this particular occurrence were taken.
According to Nugent, the photos used in the original Facebook post were taken at St Francis Xavier Church in Kearns, Utah, in 2015 for a Crux Now story.
The photo in the article refuted the notion that the Eucharist was "bloody." Instead of blood, clots, or flesh, the red coloring was a red bread mold.
However, the priest reportedly stated that the incident "appeared to be a water reaction, and thus it is no longer considered a visible Eucharistic Miracle."
According to Nugent, the church "would need to conduct an independent investigation to determine if it's mold (which can be red) or if it's a miracle." He also stated that the occurrence was "real."
