DUBLIN, Ireland - Cocaine worth €8.4 million was seized after being flown into Co Longford on a private plane.
Garda officers apprehended two men and seized the plane.
Two cars were stopped as part of Operation Tara shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday in the Lough Owel area of Co Westmeath.
During the search, Garda said 120kg of cocaine worth €8.4 million was discovered, along with several communications devices.
Follow-up searches were conducted in Naas, Co Kildare, and Waterford City, as well as at a commercial airfield in Co Longford, where the aircraft was seized.
The Drugs and Organized Crime Bureau led the garda operation.
Two men, aged 54 and 40, were detained at Dublin's Ashbourne Garda Station on suspicion of drug trafficking.
The operation, according to Assistant Commissioner Justin Kelly, Head of Organized and Serious Crime, "has prevented a significant quantity of dangerous drugs from making their way onto our streets and causing significant harm to our communities."
"A Garda Sochna is committed to disrupting and dismantling the organized criminal networks that profit from drug trafficking and have such a negative impact on our society," he added.
