GALWAY, Ireland: For the second time in weeks, a Galway pub has dropped the price charged for a pint of Guinness, to offer the cheapest price found in Ireland.
It was reported last week that The Thatch Bar was charging the cheapest price for Guinness in Galway, at 4.90 euros. Now Tigh Kitt will be increasing their price to no more than 4.90 euros to match The Thatch Bar.
A nationwide uproar was caused in late 2022 by Heineken raising its costs nationwide. The increase was then delayed until mid-January.
The Heineken increase caused most pubs to raise the cost of a pint of Guinness by 30 to 50 cents. However, the owner of Tigh Kitt maintained the price at below 5 euros.
A survey of pubs in Galway found new prices for a Guinness pint at 5 to 5.50 euros.
Additionally, publican Brendan Farrell of Clonliffe House in Ballybough said the price of their pint will not go over 5 euros.
"We have a very loyal customer base. It's a real Guinness pub. We have to absorb the costs. I couldn't ask for better clientele in the whole country. We bought the bar seven years ago and we grew into it so much. We've a serious loyal customer base and we're very loyal to the customer.
"We feel Guinness and Heineken have gone overboard with what they've done. I've been giving out to them a little bit and I'd be no different to other bars in that way. But we're trying to look after our customer base as we best we can in the middle of this," said Bernard, as quoted by galwaybeo.ie.
"There has been a rise in our electricity, which is huge, we have a big rise in our gas which is huge, but I've said to Guinness and Heineken there should be a bit of pain on all sides and we shouldn't be passing all this on to the customer sitting on the stool. I have to take a bit of myself on this."
Meanwhile, Feng Yang of O'Reilly's on Tara Street in Dublin city added, "The prices are 5 euros all the time. There is no happy hour or stuff like that..People are really happy about the prices. All the main pints are 5 euros, except for two premium beers which cost 5.50 euros."
