CO DONEGAL, Ireland - Gardai, after hunting for the driver of a car that struck and killed a 9-year old boy on Saturday night and then fled the scene, have made an arrest.
The tragedy unfolded shortly before 9:20pm Saturday night on Atlantic Way, Bundoran, in County Donegal, when the 9-year old boy was struck by a car while walking.
The vehicle sped off away from the scene.
"Gardai have seized a vehicle in connection with the investigation which will undergo technical examination," a gardai statement released Sunday said.
Late Sunday, gardai arrested a man aged in his 20s.
The man is currently detained at a Garda Station in Donegal. He has since been charged and will appear before the District Court sitting at Carrick-on-Shannon on Tuesday.
Gardai at Ballyshannon are appealing for witnesses following the crash.
Traffic diversions were put in place and the scene was preserved for examination by crime officers and Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. The local Coroner and office of the State Pathologist have been notified and arrangements will be made for a post-mortem examination. The boy' body removed to the mortuary at Sligo Hospital.
Investigators are appealing to those with video footage, including dashcam recordings, from Atlantic Way and Sea Road and the general area at the time, to make it available to them.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Ballyshannon Garda Station 074 9858530 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
