DUBLIN, Ireland - Gardaí have arrested a man in his 20s and recovered a firearm following a routine patrol in Inchicore on Tuesday night.
At approximately 8pm on Tuesday night, uniformed officers from Kilmainham's Community Engagement Unit spotted two men acting suspiciously as they entered a taxi on Turvey Avenue. When Gardaí stopped the vehicle, they detected a strong smell of cannabis and proceeded to search both men under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977.
During the search, one of the men was found wearing a ballistic vest and carrying a large sum of cash. As officers searched him, a concealed .22 calibre pistol fell from the vest.
The man was arrested and remains in custody at a Dublin Garda station. The firearm has been sent for technical examination.
"This was a timely intervention likely to have saved lives or prevented serious injury. It is another dangerous firearm taken off the streets of Dublin," Assistant Commissioner Paul Cleary said Wednesday ipraiseing the officers involved.
"Gardaí across the Dublin region are on duty 24 hours a day, supporting local communities and working hard to keep people safe," he added.
The investigation is ongoing.
