DUBLIN, Ireland: A Garda officer was injured in a stabbing incident in central Dublin on the evening of July 29, in what authorities described as an unprovoked and violent assault.
The attack occurred around 6:00 p.m. on Capel Street while the officer was conducting a routine high-visibility patrol. He sustained multiple stab wounds to his arm and side and was rushed to a Dublin hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, and he is expected to be discharged after treatment.
The Garda Press Office confirmed that two officers responded to reports of a man wielding a large knife, believed to be a kitchen blade. During the confrontation, the man attacked one of the officers before being subdued with batons and arrested at the scene. He is currently being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Cleary of the Dublin Metropolitan Region expressed support for the injured officer, stating: "This evening's unprovoked assault is a stark reminder of the dangers Gardaí face daily while protecting the public. It's not always captured on video or social media, but it is a reality of the job. Assaults like this will never be tolerated."
Cleary assured the public that the situation was under control and there was no ongoing threat to public safety. "The suspect is in custody, and I want to reassure citizens that they are safe," he added.
The Garda Representative Association (GRA) described the incident as "terrifying" and emphasized the courage shown by the officers involved. "Only for their bravery, this incident could have ended in tragedy," the GRA said in a statement. "No member of An Garda Síochána should ever be exposed to such random acts of violence. Being assaulted is not part of the job description, and more must be done to ensure safer working conditions."
Political leaders also responded to the incident. Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald condemned the attack, calling it "dreadful news" and commending the Gardaí for their swift response. "There must be zero tolerance for such disgraceful behaviour," she said, wishing the injured officer a full recovery.
Gardaí confirmed that welfare services have been offered to the injured officer and his colleagues. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
